From Humboldt to the Golf Course: The Story Behind Weed Be Better Off
Golf Was Never the Whole Story
Golf has been part of my life for decades.
So has cannabis.
Long before Weed Be Better Off became polos, hats, King Arthur, golf tournaments and a brand trying to shake up traditional golf culture, there were experiences that shaped what WBBO would eventually become.
Humboldt County was one of them.
I wasn't visiting a cannabis farm for a photo opportunity. I wasn't standing between a couple of plants for Instagram.
I was living it.
Our farm sat roughly five miles up Brannan Mountain Road in Humboldt County, California.
Calling it a road might be generous.
The climb took about 30 minutes. My Chevy pickup would flirt with overheating on the way up. The turns were narrow, steep and blind. One mistake could turn an ordinary drive into a very bad day.
Around the three-mile mark, the modern world essentially stopped.
No grid power.
If you wanted electricity, you made it.
If you needed water, you figured out how to get it.
And we were another two miles beyond that.
That was the commute.
Growing Cannabis in Humboldt County
Getting there was only the beginning.
Hundreds of cannabis plants don't care how difficult the road was. They don't care that you're tired. They don't care about your title, your LinkedIn profile or how many followers you have.
They need water.
They need attention.
They need someone who understands what they're looking at.
Every day.
That's one of the things cannabis cultivation taught me early: the plant has a remarkable ability to expose bullshit.
You can talk a great game in a conference room.
Try doing it five miles up a mountain when something goes wrong.
Humboldt had a way of separating people who understood cannabis culture from people who simply wanted to be associated with it.
There is a difference.
A big one.
Golf Clubs in the Hoop House
And somewhere in the middle of all of it were my golf clubs.
Before one of our hoop houses was filled with hundreds of plants, there they were.
Leaning inside.
Golf and cannabis occupying the same space long before somebody decided the combination was trendy.
Looking back, that image probably explains Weed Be Better Off better than almost anything we could manufacture today.
I didn't sit in a marketing meeting and decide that golf and cannabis culture might make an interesting demographic crossover.
I lived both worlds.
More than 12 years as a PGA golf professional.
The last decade working throughout the cannabis industry.
Two cultures that supposedly didn't belong together.
Except they did.
They always did.
Pressure Is Relative
Golf teaches you a lot about pressure.
Tournament golf teaches you even more.
But perspective changes when you've spent time in places like Humboldt.
A three-footer isn't quite as intimidating after you've navigated narrow mountain roads where every blind turn demands your attention.
A bad round isn't the end of the world.
Neither is a double bogey.
That's one reason we can have a little fun with golf.
It's a game.
An incredible game.
But still a game.
And maybe golf could use a few more people who don't take the country-club part quite so seriously.
Why Weed Be Better Off Is Different
There are plenty of brands that can hire someone to create a story.
We already had one.
Actually, we had hundreds.
Humboldt is one chapter.
Las Vegas is another.
The golf business is another.
Cannabis cultivation, dispensaries, sales, operations and everything that came with them added a few more.
Then an orange rescued Maine Coon named King Arthur walked into the story and refused to leave.
Somewhere along the way, all those roads collided.
And Weed Be Better Off emerged from the wreckage.
Today, WBBO is an independent golf lifestyle brand bringing together golf, cannabis culture and animal rescue in a way that reflects the worlds we've actually lived.
That's why you'll hear us say:
REAL STORY.
REAL CULTURE.
NO INFLUENCER REQUIRED.
It's not a shot at marketing.
It's a reminder of where we came from.
We aren't borrowing cannabis culture.
We aren't borrowing golf culture.
We've lived both.
The Road Matters
People usually see the finished product.
The polo.
The hat.
King Arthur in his sunglasses.
The golf course.
The photograph.
What they don't always see are the roads that came before it.
Some were fairways.
Some were highways.
Some were five-mile logging roads disappearing into the mountains of Humboldt County.
Every one of them left something behind.
And we're still traveling.
Because Weed Be Better Off was never supposed to be just another golf apparel company.
It was built from the collision of two worlds—golf and cannabis—with another purpose added along the way: helping animal rescues with every purchase so more animals like King Arthur can get their chance.
Maybe that combination isn't for everybody.
That's fine.
We were never trying to be everybody's country club brand.
Weed Be Better Off.
Not Your Country Club Brand.
Helping rescues, one round at a time.
From Humboldt to the golf course, the story continues. Explore Weed Be Better Off golf apparel, meet King Arthur—the Coolest Cat in Golf—and help us support animal rescue along the way.
