Meet King Arthur: The Rescue Cat Who Became the Coolest Cat in Golf
Sometimes the Best Stories Just Show Up
The day after I moved into my new home in Las Vegas, I heard a cat meowing outside. I didn't own a cat. Apparently, nobody had told him that.
Sitting outside was an orange cat I had never seen before. He hung around the house, watched me, disappeared, came back and generally behaved like he had been there considerably longer than I had.
I had just moved in.
He was already home.
I didn't know it then, but the orange cat outside my door would eventually become King Arthur—the Coolest Cat in Golf—and the face of Weed Be Better Off.
From the Doorstep to the Couch
Arthur didn't exactly ask to be adopted.
He just kept showing up.
Eventually, he walked inside, coughed up a hairball, found the bed and went to sleep.
That was pretty much the end of the negotiation.
Arthur never left.
Over time, the orange cat hanging around outside became part of the family. His personality grew right along with him.
Independent. Curious. Confident. Occasionally stubborn.
Arthur had found his home.
What I didn't realize was that someday he'd also have a job.
How King Arthur Became the Coolest Cat in Golf
Years later, as Weed Be Better Off expanded into golf apparel, we needed an identity that represented who we were.
Another generic golf logo wasn't going to do it.
Arthur made considerably more sense.
I had spent more than 12 years as a PGA golf professional before spending the next decade in the cannabis industry. WBBO was becoming the fusion of those two worlds—golf and cannabis culture—and Arthur somehow fit right in the middle of it.
He didn't look like traditional golf.
Neither did we.
Add the sunglasses, golf clubs and attitude, and the former Las Vegas rescue became:
King Arthur.
The Coolest Cat in Golf.
Today, Arthur is the mascot and one of the most recognizable parts of the Weed Be Better Off golf lifestyle brand.
But putting Arthur on a shirt was never going to be enough.
A Rescue Cat Gave WBBO a Bigger Purpose
Arthur got a chance.
There are thousands of animals still waiting for theirs.
That's why animal rescue became part of the Weed Be Better Off mission and why a portion of every purchase goes toward helping rescue organizations.
It's also why Arthur means considerably more to us than a logo.
Every WBBO polo, hat or shirt carrying Arthur also carries a little piece of his story.
A cat needed a home.
Someone opened the door.
Everything changed.
Now we want to help more animals get that same opportunity.
We want Arthur to help save more Arthurs.
More Than a Golf Mascot
There are plenty of golf brands with logos.
We have Arthur.
His story wasn't invented by an advertising agency. He wasn't selected from a list of potential mascots.
He simply showed up.
One day, an orange cat was meowing outside a door in Las Vegas.
He came inside.
He stayed.
And somewhere along the journey, that same rescue cat became the face of an independent brand bringing together golf, cannabis culture and animal rescue.
Funny how life works.
Maybe Arthur needed us that day.
Looking back, maybe Weed Be Better Off needed Arthur just as much.
