Golf and cannabis culture come together in the lifestyle behind Weed Be Better Off.

Golf and Cannabis Culture | Why the Worlds Are Colliding

Golf and Cannabis: Why the Two Cultures Have More in Common Than You Think

For years, golf and cannabis probably seemed like they belonged on opposite sides of the clubhouse.  One came with collared shirts, country clubs and tradition.  The other came with decades of stereotypes, counterculture and people who were rarely worried about fitting in.

Spend enough time in both worlds, though, and something interesting happens.

You realize they aren't nearly as different as people think.

I spent more than 12 years as a PGA golf professional and the last decade working throughout the legal cannabis industry. I've seen both cultures from the inside.

And somewhere between the golf course and the grow room, Weed Be Better Off found its lane.

Golf Culture Is Changing

Golf isn't abandoning its traditions—and it shouldn't.  But the people playing the game are changing.

Today's golfer doesn't necessarily fit the old country-club stereotype. Golfers bring music to the course. They wear different styles. They play barefoot. They travel. They follow different brands and increasingly aren't interested in being told what a golfer is supposed to look like.

The game is still the game.

The culture surrounding it has become much bigger.

That's good for golf.

Cannabis Culture Has Changed Too

Cannabis has gone through its own transformation.

I've watched an underground culture become a regulated industry with cultivation facilities, dispensaries, sophisticated brands and customers from virtually every walk of life.  But legalization didn't create cannabis culture.  It existed long before corporations discovered it.

That's an important distinction.

The same way golf is bigger than a country club, cannabis is bigger than a dispensary.

Both have histories, rituals, communities and people who genuinely love being part of them.

Golf and Cannabis Share Something Important

At their best, both encourage you to slow down.

Golf gives you four hours outside with friends, competition, conversation and long stretches between shots where absolutely nothing needs to happen.

Cannabis culture has always had its own appreciation for music, creativity, conversation, nature and slowing life down for a minute.  Neither experience needs the other.

But it's not difficult to understand why the communities increasingly overlap.  The connection isn't simply cannabis on a golf course.

It's attitude.

Enjoy yourself.  Don't take everything so seriously.  Be present.  And maybe stop worrying quite so much about what everybody else thinks.

Weed Be Better Off Didn't Invent the Crossover

We just happened to live it.

My golf career came first. The cannabis career came later.  There wasn't a marketing team sitting around a table asking:

“How do we combine weed and golf?”

The worlds had already collided.  Weed Be Better Off simply became an expression of that experience.  That's why WBBO doesn't need to dress cannabis culture up to make it acceptable to golf—or make golf look edgy enough to appeal to cannabis consumers.

We aren't borrowing either culture.

We've lived both.

That authenticity eventually became the foundation for our golf lifestyle line and for King Arthur, our rescued Maine Coon and the Coolest Cat in Golf, becoming its unlikely mascot.

Not Your Country Club Brand

There's room in golf for tradition.

There's also room for something different.

Weed Be Better Off is for the golfer who loves the game but doesn't necessarily need everything surrounding it to look, sound or feel exactly the way it always has.

Golf brought us here.  Cannabis helped shape the culture.  Arthur brought some personality.  And helping animal rescues gave us another reason to keep building it.  Maybe golf and cannabis were never as far apart as everyone thought.

Maybe the people enjoying both were already out there.

We just finally gave them a shirt to wear.
